A chimney sweep is mechanical cleaning of the flue, smoke chamber, and firebox. We remove soot and creosote so the next fire has a clear path. CSIA guidance: sweep masonry at about 1/8 inch of soot, or sooner if glaze (Stage 2 to 3 creosote) shows.

Mid-South humidity turns light soot sticky, so deposits that look thin can still need more than a fireplace brush from the hearth. We clean what the inspection finds. Gas systems get debris and nest removal even without creosote.

Protect the area, brush the flue, remove debris, and note visible caps and damper condition. You leave with findings, not only an empty ash bucket.

Stage 1 creosote is light and flaky. Stage 2 is harder and tar-like. Stage 3 is glazed: dense, shiny, and the form most tied to destructive chimney fires. Glaze needs more than a light brush.
